Restaurant company Kura Sushi USA (Nasdaq: KRUS) is planning to open a revolving sushi bar restaurant in the Tacoma Mall.
The new location will be the fast-growing company’s second restaurant in Washington, following the opening of a Kura Revolving Sushi Bar at Bellevue’s Wilburton Village shopping center in 2021.
The restaurant offers hand-made sushi that makes its way to diners on a conveyer belt, according to the company’s website.
Kura Sushi filed permit requests with the city of Tacoma this week for a remodel of a vacant suite in the Tacoma Mall’s northeast corner facing the property’s new outdoor lifestyle center, where Total Wine & More, Ulta Beauty, Nordstrom Rack and Kohl’s have located.
Construction is slated to start in mid-February, with the project cost estimated at $630,000, filings show. The size of the space was not specified, though a real estate marketing flyer indicates it is about 4,300 square feet.
Irvine, California-based Kura Sushi has 54 stores in 15 states in the U.S. with 10 “coming soon,” according to its website. The chain’s largest presence is in California, where it has 18 stores.
Kura Sushi’s parent company is headquartered in Japan, where it is the country’s second-largest sushi restaurant chain.
Kura Sushi opened its first U.S. restaurant in Irvine in 2008 and has added eight new restaurants to its U.S. portfolio since Aug. 31, according a news release. It plans to open another 11 to 13 restaurants in 2024. The chain aims to grow to at least 300 U.S. restaurants, according to Nation’s Restaurant News, an industry website.
The first phase of the Tacoma Mall’s lifestyle center was finished about a year ago when Kohl’s opened. Now plans for the center’s second phase are under way. The new section will include three retail stores located on the north side of the mall, according to permit requests that were filed with the city in September.
Also in September, Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo submitted permit requests to the city for a $1.3 million tenant improvement project planned in the mall’s west wing.
