LafargeHolcim Bangladesh has recently completed the replacement of a conveyor belt that brings limestone to its Surma cement plant. The replacement work was completed in mid-April.
The project was a “cross-border project between India and Bangladesh,” a company spokesperson told World Cement. “Our limestone quarry is located in India and we bring the limestone to our factory, located in Bangladesh through a 17 km long belt conveyor.”
The conveyor was originally constructed in 2004 and is one of the longest trans-boundary conveyors in the world. It covers 10 km in Bangladesh and 7 km in India.
“Our project is unique in nature, where we have out quarries in India and plant in Bangladesh. It is a symbol of friendship and economic cooperation between two neighbouring countries,” Rajesh Surana, CEO of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, told local newspaper, the Daily Star. “This is also a symbol of [the] technical capabilities of LafargeHolcim Group.”
The Surma plant is the only integrated cement plant in Bangladesh. LafargeHolcim Bangladesh is a joint venture between LafargeHolcim and Cementos Molins. Earlier this year, it completed the acquisition of Holcim Cement (Bangladesh), which now operates as a fully-owned subsidiary of the company.
In 1Q18, the company reported revenue of BDT4.62 billion, jumping from BDT2.43 billion in 1Q17. Pre-tax profits were down, however, at BDT377.62 million, compared to BDT488.35 million in 1Q17.
