A conveyor belt manufacturer is seeking tax incentives to expand its Olathe operations, which would add about 60 jobs.
A global conveyor belt manufacturer wants to expand in Olathe and add close to 60 jobs.
Safari Belting Systems Inc. submitted an application to Olathe requesting the issuance of up to $19.3 million in industrial revenue bonds to support the development of a 75,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on about 12 acres at 607 W. Old 56 Highway.
Founded in 2005, Safari creates plastic modular belts for food manufacturers. The company was acquired by Chiorino SpA, an Italian plastic fabrication company, in 2021.
According to documents filed with the city, here’s how the bonds would be used:
The site would be bound by 56 Commerce Center to the west, Kansas Highway 7 to the north and BNSF-owned railroad the south and east.
The company employs about 71 people at its 46,000-square-foot facility at 220 N Mahaffie St. The manufacturer plans to move a majority of its operations to the new facility and maintain its existing location as a warehouse and processing center for imported projects, according to the application.
The expansion project is expected to add 57 jobs over the next decade with an average starting salary of about $69,000. In addition to the bond allotment, Safari is seeking a 10-year, 50% property tax phase-in.
If plans are approved, Safari will join a growing list of manufacturers expanding operations and creating jobs in Olathe. In February, Excellerate announced it would hire up to 400 people to operate a plant to manufacture construction and electrical products. The 438,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in July next to the company’s existing production plant at 21800 W. 167th St.
Near the southwest corner of 167th Street and Hedge Lane, Heartland Coca-Cola is developing 660,000-square-foot bottling facility with plans to employ up to 675 people.
Honeywell International Inc. is investing $84 million to ramp up its technological capabilities at its Olathe aerospace manufacturing facility on 105th Street. The latest investment will allow the company to create 156 local jobs for work that previously was done overseas.
